The Chieftain preamp utilizes two 12AX7's for its interactive tone and two 12AX7's for the reverb circuits. This highly flexible preamp circuit is enhanced by a very active mid control. The preamp section is coupled to a pair of EL34's power tubes via a 12AX7 phase inverter for tremendous power reserve. Exceptional sound pressure levels can be attained with no appreciable loss of tone. Additional features include an effects loop and a switchable output impedance (4, 8, 16 ohms). User controls include Volume, Bass, Mid, Treble, Brilliance, Master Volume, and Reverb.
"My Chieftan is the most versatile and by far the best sounding amp in my collection. It has a midrange presence which pushes out in front of any band at any volume. The sound is open and responsive, voiced in a way that places the guitar into a very musical band of frequencies sitting perfectly in a mix without encroaching on the sonic territory of other instruments. Put another way, the amp is not wasting power trying to compete with the rest of the band but rather sitting in it's own pocket of the overall spectrum, chiming along in a manner reminiscent of an old Vox with a bit more gain. Then there's the huge range of tones this amp can produce just by dialing in different combinations of the MID and BRILLIANCE controls. Once you've voiced the amp to suit your guitar and style, be prepared to feel the tone of your guitar open up and sing out in a most musical and inspiring way!"
